PARTICIPATE IN THE RÍO SHILIVE EXPEDITION
Of the Amarakaeri Reserve WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a professional expedition and explore one of the last untouched primary Amazon rainforests on Earth. The expedition leader is a Dutch biologist, and other members are an experienced rainforest guide and a pharmacist, also much experienced in the rainforest. There will also be indigenous Harakmbut to back up the expedition members under all circumstances with their incredible forest knowledge and skills.
The expedition takes you hiking for about 150 kilometers (90 miles) along a rainforest river, starting at the Peruvian Andean foothills and ending at the Madre de Dios (Mother of God) River. For more details, see the report on the October 2011 Shilive Expedition on the BEE Foundation website: www.stichtingbee.nl.
THE REASON FOR THIS EXPEDITION
The Harakmbut are maintaining two law suits against the plans of the northamerican giant Hunt Oil Company to drill for gas in their ancestral lands. To stand up against the actions flowing out of the company's nearly unlimited financial resources the Harakmbut need outside financial support. Pantiacolla, the BEE Foundation and the Amazon Fund (www.amazonfund.org) have committed to this aim, organizing activities that generate funds, such as this Río Shilive Expedition. To participate in the expedition, you pay a US$350.00 tax deductible donation to the indigenous federation FENAMAD.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO PARTICIPATE
The expedition is basic, rough, and gives you a most intense wilderness experience. Every expedition member carries his/her own equipment plus maximum 5 kilo general supplies. After about three days the equipment and food will be transported on balsa rafts.
There is room for a maximum of five extra team members. Candidates have to:
. be in excellent physical condition
. be of a positive mind set
. be an excellent team player
. have previous experience in the rainforest and/or expeditions
. wish to contribute to the conservation of the Amazon rainforest
. pay for your own costs & a donation for the oil law suit of the Harakmbut Indians
We ask candidates to write us in detail (pantiac@terra.com.pe) why they would be the right person for this expedition, and can only be admitted when approved of by the expedition team.
